 MOSQUES IN PONDA

SAFA MASJID, PONDA, GOA

The largest mosque in Goa – Safa Masjid, was built in 1560, by the Sultan of Bijapur – Ibrahim Adil Shah. This mesmerizing mosque is located in Ponda.

The Portuguese destroyed the well-maintained garden that had fountains. It has a pointed terracotta tiled roof . The prayer hall is constructed on a height. And The walls are typical of mughal design and are arched.

Eid-Ul-Fitr and Eid-Ul-Zuha are celebrated with great zeal here.

SURLA TAR MOSQUE,

SURLA,GOA

Of all the mosques in Goa on this list. The Surla Taar has arguably the most interesting history. The Surla Taar was a part of 27 other mosques built in Goa by Adil Shah, out of which only a handful remain. As the name suggests. The mosque is located at Surla village. Another fun piece of trivial is that Taar means the ferry point of the village.

Which is why this mosque is quite close to the old village ferry point. Though the very structure of the mosque doesn’t look too old but a water tank, made in the front says a lot about its age. This particular water tank has four steps on all its sides and has beautiful arched architecture, all around its boundary.

The government, declared it a ‘Protected Site’ a few years back.
